AFP Awards BD&P Outstanding Corporate Philanthropist
BD&P was nominated by three charitable organizations - Calgary Homeless Foundation, the Calgary Food Bank and Habitat for Humanity, Calgary - and has had the honour of winning one of the 2011 Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Generosity of Spirit Awards: that of Outstanding Corporate Philanthropist of the Year.
BD&P first partnered with Habitat in 2001 and became the first corporate partner to fully fund the cost of building a home for a deserving family. Each subsequent year he firm has sponsored the building of a home, the latest in 2011 being an all-women build in nearby Canmore. The Calgary Homeless Foundation has had a relationship with BD&P since its inception in 1997 through donations and pro bono legal services. For many years, BD&P has also supported the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank during its annual CBC Food Bank Drive in December. In July 2008, BD&P launched its unique Put the Boots to Hunger Campaign during Stampede week, designed to encourage corporate and individual donations to the Food Bank at a time of year when donations are typically low. During Stampede week of 2009, BD&P donated $150,000 to launch the campaign and with the assistance of its clients and the generous Calgary community, easily doubled that contribution. In 2010 and 2011, BD&P increased its own contribution to $200,000 and reached its overall goals of $500,000 and $600,000 respectively.
BD&P believes that a law firm's responsibility to the community extends far beyond the provision of legal services. BD&P is proud of its social conscience and the contributions of so many of its lawyers and staff to the volunteer sector. Many at BD&P have been inspired by chairman James S. Palmer, whose extensive community involvement throughout his successful career has been truly impressive.
