Michael Akins

Michael returns to BD&P after summering with the firm in 2018. He is originally from Winnipeg and completed his law degree from Robson Hall at the University of Manitoba.

During law school, Michael was elected as the Manitoba Bar Association Representative and served as a Chapter Representative to the Canadian Bar Association. Throughout the summer and school year, Michael volunteered at the Manitoba Interfaith Immigration Council (Welcome Place) where he conducted interviews and transcribed narratives for refugee claimants seeking asylum to Winnipeg. Entering his final year, Michael studied international business and comparative law at Hertford College, as part of a summer program at the University of Oxford.

Prior to law school, Michael completed a Bachelor of Recreation Management and Community Development (Gold Medalist) from the University of Manitoba. He also competed as a dual-sport varsity athlete for the Manitoba Bisons, where he earned Academic All-Canadian honours. He has prior work experience as the Manager of Youth Initiatives for Special Olympics Manitoba and in the operations department for a start-up tech company.

Outside of the office, Michael enjoys breaking in a good sweat at the gym, hot yoga, hiking, and reading during downtime. He is also passionate about sports and is a loyal lifelong fan to his champion Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Philadelphia Eagles.
