BD&P Hosts Fourth Annual International Women’s Day Event, 2012
BD&P was most pleased to host its fourth annual International Women's Day luncheon on International Women's Day, March 8, 2012. Many clients joined BD&P lawyers at the luncheon at the Calgary Petroleum Club for a very successful event, which raised $25,000 for Equality Effect, which amount was generously matched by the PeopleSense Foundation yielding total proceeds of $50,000.
Dr. Fiona Sampson was the engaging guest speaker for the event. Dr. Sampson is the Founder and Executive Director of Equality Effect – a charitable organization that brings together leading human rights experts to collaborate on legal work for women and girls affected by human rights issues. The focus of Fiona’s talk was the 160 Girls Project in Kenya – a legal initiative aimed at forcing Kenyan authorities to protect girls from sexual violence and achieving justice for 160 Kenyan girls (aged 3-17) who have been raped.
The international theme for International Women's Day 2012 was "Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures" – a fitting theme for the subject matter of the keynote speaker– the connection of these young girls in Kenya with each other and with Dr. Sampson and her team to seek justice together, which will undoubtedly inspire the enhancement of the future of other young girls.
Thank you to all BD&P lawyers and clients who attended and donated generously to this worthy cause.
