Michael earned his law degree at the University of Calgary. While at law school, Michael took on a leadership role with the Environmental Law Society, organizing events for the club that included career development opportunities for students, speaker series, and backcountry hiking and skiing trips. Michael also played for the Faculty of Law hockey team.
Before law school, Michael received his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from Queen's University. Michael gained summer work experience as an engineering student at a junior oil and gas company. He also spent several summers working as a camp counselor leading canoe and hiking trips in the Rockies. While at school, Michael participated in a number of intramural sports including hockey, soccer, and volleyball.
Michael also has a Master's degree in biomedical engineering from the University of British Columbia. During his master's degree, Michael published research on osteoarthritis and worked as part of a design team to develop a medical device.
In his free time, Michael tries to spend as much time as possible in the mountains, skiing, mountain-biking, and camping. He also likes to play hockey and to read.
