"From day one it’s been apparent that everyone wants the best for me, both professionally and personally. People are quick to help with work, and just as fast to chat about things personal to you." – Reed Boothby, 2023-24 Articling Student
Articling student program
Get the best legal training and experience possible in a positive, supportive setting. We’ll help you develop the technical, practical, and analytical skills you need to be successful. You'll complete our program feeling confident and ready for a successful career as an associate – and future partner – at BD&P.
Experience in all major practice areas
Our rotation system immerses you in different practice groups. You’ll work with associates, partners, and clients throughout the year to gain a well-rounded articling experience. The result? Faster development and incredible growth in your practice skills.
Exposure to high-profile files across diverse industries
We don't just save our complex matters for our more senior people. We give them to our best and brightest. That could be you. Start a legal career that rewards talent with opportunity. Here are some examples of recent significant work:
- Represented Peace River Hydro Partners at the Supreme Court of Canada on precedent-setting issues.
- Advised the Shaw Communications Inc. Special Committee on its $26 billion merger with Rogers Communications Inc.
- Advised Inter Pipeline Ltd. in its $15 billion acquisition by Brookfield Infrastructure Partners L.P.
- Represent one of Canada’s major technology companies, DIRTT Environmental Solutions Ltd. in its litigation.
Your principal supervises your progress as an articling student, but you also have the benefit of teaming up with an associate or partner as your mentor. Your mentor will help you navigate all areas of practice development and management, and will ensure you receive a diverse range of work experience and client exposure.
Our legal talent team oversees the development of all BD&P students. They coordinate our structured educational programs and serve as a sounding board, so you can get extra support when you need it.
Informal and formal feedback
You can’t improve and grow without constructive feedback. You’ll get informal feedback throughout the year on all aspects of your work. And scheduled formal reviews will make sure you understand how you’re progressing.
Time for fun
There’s more to life than work. Take part in firm-sponsored community activities. Join the BD&P cycling club or BD&P hockey team, or watch a show at the Vertigo Theatre. We also hold lots of optional group activities like ski trips, golf tournaments, dinners, and more.
How to apply
You can apply through the viRecruit portal during official recruiting periods. Applications should be addressed to the Student Hiring Committee.
