Power and Renewable Energy

With the increasing focus on lower-carbon energy sources, the power industry is coming under increased attention from investors, developers, financiers and government. Whether this is natural gas, as a transition fuel, hydrogen or renewable fuels - such as hydropower (storage, run-of-river, pumped storage and tidal), solar, wind, geothermal and biomass. Alberta, in particular, boasts the potential to lead Canada in renewable energy initiatives given its abundance of natural gas, sunshine and expansive prairies. Additionally, the electricity market in Alberta is deregulated, which means that there are less barriers to entry for new industry participants.

We help clients navigate the legal and regulatory hurdles and mitigate the risk involved in developing, financing and completing transactions in relation to both conventional electrical power and renewable energy projects. Working with stakeholders of all types, we develop legally and commercially sound solutions for all types of power transactions, including the development of new projects and investments in existing projects.

Our team advises on all stages and aspects of power and renewable energy projects from the early planning stages through to compliance, securing regulatory approvals, obtaining financing and government funding, emissions trading, land acquisitions, consultation with Indigenous groups, construction and tax planning matters.
